چکیده

This study investigated the neural correlates of hypophonia in individuals with Idiopathic Parkinson’s disease (IPD) before and after the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT), using O-H2O Positron Emission Tomography (PET). Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) changes associated with overt speech-motor tasks relative to the resting state were measured in the IPD subjects before and after therapy, and in a group of healthy controls. Before LSVT, patients had strong speechrelated activations in motor and premotor cortex, supplementary motor cortex and inferior lateral premotor cortex which were significantly reduced post-LSVT. In addition, significant right-sided activations were present in anterior insular cortex, caudate head, putamen, and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex following LSVT. Finally, the LSVT-induced neural changes were not present with transient experimentercued increases of loudness in LSVT-untreated patients. This treatment-dependant functional reorganization suggests a shift from an abnormally effortful to a more automatic implementation of speech-motor actions.

Neural correlates of efficacy of voice therapy in Parkinson's disease identified by performance-correlation analysis.

LSVT LOUD (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment) is efficacious in the treatment of speech disorders in idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD), particularly hypophonia. Functional imaging in patients with IPD has shown abnormalities in several speech regions and changes in these areas immediately following treatment. This study serves to extend the analysis by correlating changes of regional neural acti...

Lee Silverman voice treatment (LSVT) mitigates voice difficulties in mild Parkinson’s disease

Background: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder and many PD patients experience some type of voice and speech disorders during the course of illness. In this study, the aim was to investigate the effect of Lee Silverman voice treatment (LSVT) on improving voice difficulties in patients with mild PD using voice handicap index (VHI).    Methods: This interventiona...

Effects of an extended version of the lee silverman voice treatment on voice and speech in Parkinson's disease.

PURPOSE The present study examined vocal SPL, voice handicap, and speech characteristics in Parkinson's disease (PD) following an extended version of the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT), to help determine whether current treatment dosages can be altered without compromising clinical outcomes. METHOD Twelve participants with idiopathic PD received the extended treatment version (LSVT-X), ...

Background: Speech disorders are a feature of Parkinson’s disease, typically worsening as the disease progresses. The Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) was developed to address these difficulties. It targets vocal loudness as a means of increasing vocal effort and improving co-ordination across the subsystems of speech. Aims: Currently LSVT is not widely available, and there are practical di...
